Explaining Digital Marketing to My Family:
Here at Jubilant, we just wrapped up our annual Holiday party. We went bowling, and I’ll never tell you my score – let’s just say I’m awful. Yeah, it’s that time of year again. Time for parties, cookies, end of year reports, and most importantly, family. I’ll be traveling home to Nashville to see my folks. Invariably, at some point that week, Mom will ask me “Now what do you do again?” (Mom, if you’re reading this, you’re the best!)
Here’s my explanation for Mom, and you.
I work at Jubilant Digital Marketing doing all sorts of digital marketing work. Jubilant builds websites and manages Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies to keep our clients’ sites top of the list in Google and other search engines. We also manage paid search campaigns where we place ads at the top of the Google search results. We also do email marketing, marketing automation, and CRM management.
Now I’ve gotten both Mom and her friends confused. I’ll look down at my shoes, think for a second, and clarify: We make companies Googleable. (Yes, I just made up that word.)
SEO & SEM
Businesses come to Jubilant for help to make them easy to find for anyone who is either looking for them, or looking for what they do, make, or sell. To make you Googleable, we use SEO and SEM strategies. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) makes your website get along nicely with Google. Getting along equals brownie points, and brownie points buy you a better spot on the search results page. Search engine marketing (SEM) is paying Google to display an ad for you. In the business, we call it Pay per click (PPC) because you only pay when someone clicks your ad. PPC ads can be text-based, showing up with search results, or display ads like the ones you see on the sides and top of a website.
Email, Marketing Automation & CRM
Another big part of digital marketing is email marketing and marketing automation. Those two go hand-in-glove. Jubilant creates newsletters, special promotions, and all kinds of other email marketing campaigns. Marketing automation sets up a process to send the right emails to the right people at the right time. The secret to marketing automation is knowing who you know, and what you know about them. That’s where CRM’s come in.
Customer Relationship Management programs (CRM’s) like SharpSpring, Salesforce, and HubSpot are like a super-powered searchable Rolodex. CRM’s keep track of when you met someone, how you met them, what they’ve bought from you; or when they might. You can add pretty much anything about your relationship with them to that you want to keep track of. This is really important information when setting up marketing automation. Whether it’s a thank you email or a friendly hello to a customer you haven’t interacted with in a while, your CRM will tell your email program what to send to whom, and when.
There you have it – Jubilant in a nutshell.
We’re geeky about what we do and fierce about driving a positive ROI from digital marketing. If you need help making your company “Googleable” or untangling the mysteries of marketing automation, drop us a line, we’d love to chat.
